Milou van Poortvliet works as a Marketing Communications PR Manager at Diesel Benelux and she always looks impeccably cool. She is one of those girls that can effortlessly get away with wearing head to ankle menswear, while still looking super sexy. She owns the other half of my Balenciaga earring (that we bought when we thought it was an awesome idea to go outlet shopping in New York with minus 20°C) and we thought it was time for a chat about her super organized wardrobe. “The good thing about working in the fashion industry is that pretty much everything is possible. The work attire at Diesel does not consist of suits or pencil skirts, but involves a whole lot of Diesel denim. The boyfriend and skinny high waisted fits are my favorites, they are easy to convert into an evening appropriate outfit. I would describe my style as minimalistic with an edge. I love clear lines and simplicity, whether it is a pair of silk black smoking pants or a crispy white shirt. I do not need a whole lot of ruffles and prints. I think my style in a way reflects my personality. I don’t feel the need to be loud in the way I dress, I prefer to keep it clean. For me, the right amount of simplicity with good detailing is the most interesting. A bit less is more, no big logos or anything. Sometimes people find it boring, though I notice that the like-minded appreciate things that are well structured and of good quality and there is a sense of acknowledgement for one another. My style can also be described as gender neutral. My outfits always have a boyish touch to them. I love it when things are a bit oversized and especially menswear gives you a touch of nonchalance. I shop a lot at the menswear department – I have a lot of leather bomber menswear jackets – or borrow stuff from my boyfriend and father. Nothing beats their sweaters, shirts and bomber jackets. The bigger the better. I love an understated sexy intelligent cool look with some grunge and street in the mix. I think that pretty much sums it up.” “The denims I wear are (of course) Diesel and Diesel Black Gold. They last a very long time and the variety in washes is endless. But I also buy high street, as they have some great items. The cashmere sweaters of Zara for example are great. Lately I have been trying to invest in timeless pieces. Some of my favourite brands are Vetements, Acne Studios, Alexander Wang, Retrosuperfuture, Jacquemus and Sandro. Aspirational wise I would go for Céline, Sacai and The Row. I prefer to wear flats, boots or sneakers, I am definitely not a heels kind of person. Maybe it is because I am not able to walk in them properly haha, so I’d rather just not. Nothing is less sexy than a woman wearing heels, but not being able to walk in them! Most of my shoes are either Nike (Air Max, Air Force 1 or Huarache) or Acne Studios. Some of my current favourites are my Acne Studios Lenna sandals and the Linden boots, they both fit my style perfectly. Another wardrobe favorite is my Diesel menswear Buster denim that has a vintage wash. I am also really into this off-white Zara blouse with laces on the sides and flared sleeves. And of course my Céline and Jil Sander bags. These are all timeless items I think and that is what I like about them.” Left: Shirt, H&M; Sandals, Acne Studios. Right: Leather Coat, Garella; Shirt, Acne Studios; Leather Vest, Diesel Black Gold; Denim Jacket, Diesel; Blazer, Acne Studios; Bomber Jacket, Diesel. For example, the gold Kenya necklace from Figaros Bryllup recently caught my attention. When it comes to bags, I try to go for the more niche models. I would hate to spend a fortune on a designer bag and then suddenly it is everywhere. I want my bags to be unique and different and I want to still love them 30-something years from now. My absolute favorites are the bags from Céline. They are made of beautiful leather and the logo usage is very subtle. I currently have the black Céline bum bag on my mind as a possible next purchase! Another great brand for bags is Loewe. Ever since Jonathan Anderson became in charge, I have been very much inspired by their apparel collections as well and of course his own label J.W. Anderson.” Left: Leather Pants, Sportmax. Right: Bag, Céline; Sunglasses, Retrosuperfuture. I always think of it as getting a souvenir from my travels. Or maybe this is just my way of justifying certain purchases! This way it always reminds me of the place I was at when I got it and the mood I was in at the time I bought it. Stores that I frequently go to are VOO Store in Berlin, Dover Street Market in New York City, Opening Ceremony and Houben and Renaissance in Antwerp.
