What was supposed to be a two hour conversation about style and other things alike, became a ten(!) hour chat while going through piles of clothes accompanied by delicious sandwiches and then followed by a couscous dinner. Meet Nicole, stylist and shopping editor at Dutch ELLE, and her not yet edited however amazing wardrobe.

When did you know you wanted to something with fashion?
In high school I started to experiment with clothes a bit. My classmates sometimes told me I always looked very peculiar and I never knew whether to take that as a compliment or not. Back then I discovered I was very into fashion, but even more interested in personal style. When I was studying at the Amsterdam Fashion Institute (AMFI) we had to create our own magazine and that is when I first styled a shoot. I thought it was absolutely amazing, I like to tell stories and styling for me is the perfect way to tell my story.

Your style?
It is pretty casual, not too dressy. When I do wear something dressy there is always something different with it, like this suit I wore in London during Fashion Week from Bruunz Bazaar, which is pink. When I go for something casual like a pair of jeans I always make sure it is not too casual either, most of the time I spice things up with a lipstick. I like things oversized and I guess you could say my wardrobe is an eclectic mix of things.

How do you ‘use’ your own style for ELLE?
Of course I keep my own style and what I like in mind when I shop or pull looks, but I always think of different types of women when I am styling an editorial or working on a concept. I either have to just like an item or look or I have to be able to like it on others.

Favorite brands?
Carven, Alexander Wang, A.P.C and Stella McCartney. For jeans MiH and Current/Elliot and Petit Bateau for my basics.

Mulberry and Jérôme Dreyfuss.

Sky, Lock Stock & Barrel and Rika in Amsterdam and Merci in Paris.

Current favorite item in your wardrobe?
My Filippa K bomber jacket and Carven x Petit Bateau dress.

If you do not know what to wear, where do you usually end up in?
Jeans, a striped top, my big camel or black coat, sneakers and a lipstick.

Most precious item?
A black and white collarless blouse from my mom and my Isabel Marant parka.

Anything that is still missing?
The ultimate biker jacket and Gucci horse bit loafers in yellow.

Something that everyone should have in her closet?
A good bag that can upgrade any outfit, which does not necessarily have to be an expensive bag. And something navy, a way more exciting color than black and it looks good on just about anybody.

Shopping tip?
When I buy something, I need to be able wear it in 5 different ways, to 5 different occasions and it should not make people think, there is that girl again in her…

Any future dreams?
ELLE really fits me and I can see myself growing from my current function to something bigger there, but I also love photography and I would like to develop that side of me. In my opinion it is good to focus on one thing, though I am still young and I keep all my options open, so maybe standing behind the lens instead of standing next to it might be something I could do in the future, along with being a stylist.
