BEAUTY BEACH ESSENTIALS

Tags: , , , , , , , ,

As you might have noticed by the amount of beach posts we are currently doing, we are quite excited about everything summer. This past week was all about surviving our first heat wave of the year (maybe even in years). And what better place to do so than at the beach? Whenever I go to the beach I tend to overpack in the beauty department. I mean when heading to the beach, everyone’s number one beach essential should be a proper sunscreen. But you never really know when you’re in desperate need of that rose water spray. Or a radiant lip crayon for that matter. Here’s a few of my current favorites.

BEAUTY TALK WITH FAYETTE

I’ll never forget the first time I saw Fayette. A few years ago we bumped into each other on the dance floor, wearing the exact same hysterical shiny pants. Most girls would’ve probably rolled their eyes and moved on, but not Fayette. Instead, she high fived me and we ended up dancing all night. That situation sums up her fascinating beauty habits. Authentic, natural and with a touch of je ne sais quoi. Today, we both despise those pants. And even though I’m slightly embarrassed for owning them, I can’t thank them enough at the same time. Allow me to introduce you to one of my best friends plus beauty and style favorite Fayette. And no worries, no shameful slacks needed.

PRIMARY YELLOW

I used to absolutely hate yellow, but the more I think about it (trust me, I’ve even been thinking about a yellow bag lately) the more it grows on me. So when I walked in backstage at Delpozo and saw the primary yellow in the inner corners of the models eyes, I got really excited.

BEAUTY TALK WITH YOKAW

I had the pleasure of working with Yokaw (she’s a make up artist!) a few times now. And every time I do so, I am amazed by her creativity and what she comes up with even if I give her the vaguest description of my ideas. Remember our editorial at the beach? Her work. Remember the one in the hotel with the bath tub with that crazy good eye liner? Her again. Time for a Beauty Talk!

BRUSHES 101

This one is for all the manic lip gloss collectors. The eye palette hoarders. The hand cream obsessed. Basically, all make up maniacs who compulsively splurge on one specific beauty category (you know who you are!). Put the credit card down, and no one gets hurt. We need to have a serious conversation.

SOVIET STRUCK

I can’t help it. Russian women fascinate me. There is something magical about them. Irina Shayk, Anne Vyalitsyna, Sasha Pivovarova (to name a few). They behold so much mystery and beauty. Not to mention distance – and their impeccable style. It makes me wonder: the colder the climate, the colder the women? Next week I will have the pleasure of discovering the truth myself. Moscow will be my playground for a total of four days, in which I plan to raid the racks of make up stores I probably can’t pronounce. Which brings me to a specific question for you: is there anything in terms of beauty products that I have to see, try or take back with me? I am an overpacker by nature. This often results in overstuffed make-up bags. So to prevent a game of Russian Roulette at customs, I decided to preselect this Moscow beauty kit.

PROENZA SCHOULER FOR MAC

Last Sunday I got so many questions regarding the lip color I was wearing. While I have been in a pretty exclusive relationship with my Ruby Woo ever since I discovered its amazingness through make-up artist Siddhartha, I guess the color Mangrove from the Proenza Schouler for Mac range could be called my Spring fling. When you see the color it looks like just another ordinary red. But when applied, it turns into this orangy hue that I really really like. If the color is not your cup of tea, you could always just buy it for the case, because it’s a-ma-zing! Lipstick [Mangrove], Proenza Schouler for Mac.

3 SPRING BEAUTY LOOKS

After two beauty posts here on afterDRK, it is time to properly introduce myself. Hi! Remember the 6 Spring Beauty Essentials and my avowal about their potential? A promise made is a debt unpaid. That’s why I decided to use my first cameo to demonstrate the potential of the beauty products I discussed before. Please bare with me. One face, six products, three Spring beauty looks: let’s go!

6 SPRING BEAUTY ESSENTIALS

Ahh, Spring. The time of blooming cherry trees and crocus. The soft escape from winter. The season of rebirth and regrowth. And…an endless indecisiveness. If anything makes me nervous, it’s being in a constant state of ‘in between’. Yes, this whishy-washy sister of summer puts us in dilemmas. It’s often too cold for a skirt, but too warm for a long thick coat (there goes a classic). Even our shoe game is put at stake. Embrace the peep toe or safely buckle up in something boot-like? But the biggest challenge of all remains my make up bag. Sudden changes of weather conditions ask for options, especially in terms of beauty. I over pack and over stack everything in my life. Shoes, crunchy cookies, sticky notes but most of all lipsticks. They say the content your bag often represents your lifestyle. If you are like me, your bag probably looks like a whirlwind of surprises. A bit like spring, ironically. In order to make peace with my bag – and life a bit easier – I came up with a little formula. Nothing mathematical, it’s all practical. Better yet, a tool kit of 6 Spring beauty essentials (Sabrina already made a Winter version HERE). 1. A versatile, long wearing foundation stick. For instance this one from Bobbi Brown. This pocketsize bad boy feels weightless and has a firm, creamy texture that blends in perfectly with your skin color. 2. A nourishing, covering concealer. Unfortunately, we can’t buy sleep. But we can cover dark circles. This creamy and pressed powder combo, again from Bobbi, does it like no other. How can she be so bright-eyed and bushy-tailed despite having been up all night? 3. A multifaceted lip palette. Don’t let the Barbie connotation of this product scare you. They are not exclusively for six year olds. The Pro Lip Palette in Editorial Oranges from MAC contains six (what’s in a number?) colors in vibrant, orange hues. Yay, options! Names include Sheen Supreme, Sandy B and Look At Her. That alone is reason enough to equip oneself with this palette, isn’t it? 4. An all-purpose blush. Some beauty looks work great with sun kissed cheeks. Others call for a rosier glow, or even a combination of both. The Terracotta Four Seasons Bronzer from Guerlain gives the possibility to work with bronze and pink shades separately, as well as together. A huge plus! 5. A multidimensional eye shadow palette. A perfect neutral matte or a bold smokey eye? The great thing about this more compact version of the Naked Palette by Urban Decay is the way it allows to build. Rich in pigment, with just a hint of satin. 6. A high precision mascara. What opens up your eyes more than mascara? Le Volume de Chanel helps to achieve instant volume in a single stroke. Whether you prefer full or subtle, separated lashes, the short bristles of this mascara allows enough play. Brows, lips, cheeks and eyes, this setup provides the ingredients to a menu of fresh looks. From a self-respected ‘barely there’ style to a dramatic party look, it’s all covered in this little mix. But, wait a minute. You need proof? This post calls for a cliffhanger… Skin Foundation Stick, Bobbi Brown; Concealer Kit, Bobbi Brown; Pro Lip Palette [Editorial Oranges], MAC; Terracotta Four Seasons Bronzer [00], Guerlain; Naked Basic Palette, Urban Decay; Le Volume Mascara [Vert Grisé], Chanel.
