There is just one person in the entire world that can make me want to fill my whole entire basket at Sephora and that is Yara. She does not work in beauty, but she sure knows her stuff. She taught me about this magic pink egg (article coming soon!), dragged a whole suitcase full of make-up to New York and easily creates the best subtle smoky eye for everyday wear. Time for a beauty talk!
Your morning ritual?
I would love to say I am that person that eats her healthy biological breakfast every morning, but as I am not a morning person, I usually take a run for the shower in slight panic. I regularly skip breakfast really (yes, I know it is the worst thing to do).
Make-up wise, I kind of always create the same look, which – due to lots of practicing – I am able to do within 5 minutes. My mornings are all about trying to create some sort of decency in the littlest timeframe.
Can you tell us about that look?
I am a huge fan of French brands when it comes to skin care and I currently use Clarins Beauty Flash Balm before I put on my Make Up Forever HD Primer and Foundation. Some say one should put eyeshadow first to prevent fall-out, but I like to start with a proper base.
I always put bronzer on my cheekbones and a bit of Wet ‘n Wild Pearlescent Pink 831E blush on my cheeks. It might be the oddest brand name in beauty history (it sounds sounds a little raunchy!), but it is one of my best budget tips. This blush is only 4 dollars and a pretty good dupe for Nars Orgasm.
One of my other budget tips is Duane Reade in the US, where I regularly go shopping in my pj’s in the middle of the night to cure jetlag insomnia.
For the eyes, my new discovery is a winged eyeliner in a rusty copper tone by M.A.C. My signature look is probably a subtle taupe shade from the Urban Decay Naked Palette #2 with a darker accent on the lash line. Matte eyeshadows are my favorite, a bit of shimmer is fine, but nothing glittery. Mascara is quite a defining part of my look and I am currently using Lancôme Hypnôse Precious Cells, which has a nice thin brush.
For the lips, I use Elizabeth Arden 8 Hour Cream. It is my ultimate favorite product on earth.
Oh and eyebrows! I used to use a powder, but I recently switched to an Eyebrow Powder Gel from Helena Rubinstein in Taupe Blonde.
Quite some products, haha. I just like playing around with it all, and only use a little bit of everything. Applying my make-up is one of my favorite moments of the day, maybe even better than getting dressed! It’s a peaceful little moment I have all to myself before I start a hectic day.
Any changes from day to night?
I already play around with eyeshadow for daytime, but I like to go a bit darker when I go out. I never take it off to start all over, instead I like to layer with for example a winged eyeliner, some black eyeshadow or a touch of gold.
What about your hair?
My holy grail of hair care is Sea Salt Texturizing Spray from Toni&Guy, which I use to create a bit of a wave with my hands. And my hair mask with pear oil from Christophe Robin that smells so good I would almost want to eat it! Also, I think dry shampoo is one of the best inventions.
I just try to never use anything that makes my hair go flat, I like things fluffy.
Jean Paul Gaultier Classique. I would love to have something no one else wears, but I just really love this one.
The ultimate product that still does not exist, would be…
Something that makes hair grow like crazy, like an extra 20cm in the blink of an eye.
And if you could use just one product for the rest of your life?
Oh my, I knew you were going to ask me this one! I guess mascara, since it makes the biggest difference. I am doubting between mascara, a rosy blush or eyebrow gel, since they all make you look more fresh and awake. Eyebrow gel is probably the most original answer, and I like how a defined brow shapes the face. I’ll choose that one and then secretly put on mascara when you are not looking!
Funniest beauty story?
As a writer for Dutch ELLE magazine, I had to test drive all kinds of crazy catwalk looks for a week. I did a flamingo eye, pink and yellow, that was shown at Peter Som and had a tribal experiment on my forehead that made me look like I was on my way to a live action role play convention, plastic swords included! They even made me go to meetings looking like that.
I use glycolic acid by Etat Pur as an exfoliant instead of facial scrubs. Most people are not aware of the fact that scrubs make tiny little scratches on your skin – and I appreciate that this is all natural.
