BEGIJNENSTEEG

Now that we have a scooter to navigate around the city, this hoodie tied around my waist was more of a functional choice than a fashionable one, since higher speed means more wind which equals instant cold. Yes, I could have easily put on an angora jumper or a snugly coat, but spring sprung a while ago in my books and I might as well try to live up to it – despite the fact that the temperature is still not cooperating.

All this tying makes me wonder though, was I ever a non-functional dresser anyway? I mean, apart from wearing uncomfortable heels every now and then and a belt because it is pretty rather than wearing it as a necessity, I very rarely wear things that do not have an obvious role. Hence the minor amount of details and the non-schmuck kind of way that I dress…I guess.

This does not mean I get dressed just for the sake of getting dressed – exceptions aside (forgive me as I work from home and my pj’s are so damn comfy) – I do like to get dressed as if I am going to wipe the delivery woman off her feet while I sign for my packages. Hmm, maybe I will take this as a personal challenge, to add a little something of non-functionality to my daily wear-ables.

ON PACKING

Packing for short trips can be a true pain in the *ss, but now that I am doing it more frequently, I am starting to get the hang of it. I used to really overpack, but dragging all the luggage around is an even bigger pain in the *ss than packing it – especially when you live on the fourth floor and you don’t have an elevator, I can tell you that.

I just packed my bags – just one I promise! – for a two day trip to Sweden to finish the project I was talking about (but not really talking about) in my newsletter. The ‘outfit’ pictured above is something I usually wear in the plane, a simple look that is mostly very comfy.

Shoes, Balenciaga; Cap, Gina Tricot; Jeans, Dr Denim; T-Shirt, American Apparel; Watch, Juicy Couture; Sweater, Hope.

These are the random, but very necessary things I take with me. I used to keep a list of these things, because I literally always forget something – mostly my business cards – but now that I travel more frequently I have that list printed in the back of my head.

Book, Mr Porter Paper Back (hey, can’t give a gift to the boyfriend without reading it myself); Notebook, Smythson; An International Power Adapter; Passport; iPhone; something to eat; Camera, Canon EOS M; Mini Make-Up; Glasses, Mykita; Toothbrush and -Paste; Tonic, Origins; Business Cards; Sunglasses, Bottega Veneta; iPad; Bank- and Creditcards; Headphones.

And of course, a decent outfit to wear…

Jacket, Maison Martin Margiela; Sleeveless Jacket, Acne; T-Shirt, Zadig et Voltaire; Bag, Kurt Geiger.

ps: Do not forget your pj’s, underwear and socks!

SKINNY JEANS

You might have noticed I have been wearing the same pair of jeans for the whole weekend in Paris. I put them on right before I jumped on the train heading south and – apart from sleeping in my pajamas – never really took them off until I got back home in Amsterdam.

I usually wear jeans that are a bit more loose (like these ones I always wear), but then sometimes an outfit looks better with a more fitted pair. The thing is though, they never really stay ‘fitted’, unless you buy those jeans leggings without pockets and zippers or anything, but those are just not ok.

Finding a pair of jeans that is the right color, has the right fit and then an ok price is like finding a needle in a haystack. For most women it is just a pain in the *ss. I sometimes go on what I call a denim scouting expedition, try on over 20 pairs of jeans just to find the perfect one and then come home empty handed.

Anyway, I bumped into the Skinzee jeans from Diesel the other day and decided to give them a try, see if they too get saggy at the knees after wearing them. After a full weekend of shopping and sitting down for coffees in between in Paris, they are still the same.
